Chapter Fifteen

Monday was a holiday. July Fourth.

Which meant Kirby would not be painting that day, and when Amelia opened her eyes that morning, it was the first thought she had. No Kirby today.

Her level of disappointment was truly surprising.

They’d spent the rest of yesterday eating and drinking and talking. Occasionally kissing. It would’ve been easy—God, so fucking easy—to ask her to stay. To take Kirby to bed. To let Kirby take her to bed. But it felt too fast. Too soon. Kirby seemed to feel it, too, because she made no moves, offered no hints about wanting to spend the night. And when it was past dark, and they were still stretched out on lounges by the pool, after taking a sexy night swim, Kirby had gotten up and collected her things. Then, with her hands on the arms of Amelia’s chair, she’d leaned down and kissed her. So slowly. So deeply. So thoroughly that Amelia knew all she had to do was run her fingers over the crotch of her own bathing suit, and she’d come harder than she had in ages.

But she’d tamped it down, walked Kirby to the door, and watched her drive away.

And now it was Monday, and it was a holiday, and Kirby wouldn’t be coming over to paint today. Damn it.

She hated that she hated it.

She hauled herself out of Victor Renwick’s king-size bed and headed down to the kitchen with sleepy canines at her heels to let them out. The sky was overcast and gray, and she thought about heading right back up and crawling back under the covers to sleep some more. The forecast called for thunderstorms, the perfect kind of weather for sleeping in and only getting up so she could make some coffee and curl up with a book.

But she had a few clients to see. And she really needed to sit down and work on her marketing. Dogz Rule was doing pretty well but could do better if she’d just put some time and effort into her online presence.

Her second cup of coffee in hand, she was showered and was just sitting down in front of her computer when her phone pinged a text. Expecting Vanessa, who texted her every morning, she was surprised to see a different name. Her heart did a little flip, and a throbbing started low in her body, astounding her at how quickly it showed up.

“Wow. Is that the effect she has now? Already?” Amelia shook her head, feeling both a little giddy and a little freaked.

Good morning, beautiful.

Well. How lovely was that greeting? She quickly typed back a hello.

Busy tonight? came Kirby’s next text. And a crossed fingers emoji.

“Nope,” Amelia said as she typed.

I’d like to take you to dinner.

Amelia blinked at her phone. A date? Kirby was asking her on a date, right? Warmth flooded through her, and the throbbing kicked up a notch or twelve. And in that moment, she wanted nothing more, nothing else in the entire world than to spend more time with Kirby.
